Delpotro_0913To the hardcore tennis fan, the result shouldn’t have come as a shock. However, that didn’t make the fashion in which it happened any less startling.

Dominating from start to finish, Juan Martin del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal, 6-2, 6-2, 6-2, in a US Open semifinal. The 6-foot-6 Argentinean was never broken on his serve throughout the entire match, dealing the No. 3 seed the worst loss of his Grand Slam career.

On the flipside, was it the best match of the young del Potro’s career?

“I think so,” del Potro said. “I was so focused every moment because Rafa is such a great player.”

Del Potro will make his first-ever Grand Slam final Monday, when he takes on either top-seeded Roger Federer or No. 4 Novak Djokovic.

In three sets that were mirror images of each other, the 20-year-old got ahead early and closed each one with a final break of Nadal’s serve. Del Potro had won both previous matches between the two this season, both on hard court, making him the only person to defeat Nadal more than once this year.

One got a sense of how the match was going to go when it took Nadal 10 minutes and one save of a break point to hold his first service game. The sixth-seeded del Potro broke him on his next try and never looked back.

About the only bad thing to happen to the big Argentine was when he slipped on the baseline in his second service game. He got up, promptly cranked an ace out wide and wound up holding.

At 2-5, Nadal would save two set points, but del Potro capitalized on a third opportunity when he ripped an inside-out forehand just inside the line.

An early break in the second set came after three ferocious forehand winners by del Potro and a double fault by Nadal. The Spaniard nearly bounced back in the next game, but del Potro was able to save a break point — his fifth of the match in five tries — to keep his hold on the match.
