Defending champion Russia slipped past Greece 68-65 behind 17 points and nine rebounds from Kelly McCarty on Sunday at the European basketball championship.

Russia returns only three players from the team that upset Spain in the 2007 final. It has struggled in this year’s tournament and has clearly missed its two top players from 2007 – Utah Jazz forward Andrei Kirilenko and J.R. Holden.

Tied at 48 early in the fourth quarter, Sergey Monya hit 3-pointers on three consecutive trips down the court to give Russia a nine-point lead. The defending champions then hit free throws down the stretch to defeat previously unbeaten Greece.

Earlier Sunday in Group E, point guard Vrbica Stefanov scored 25 points to lead Macedonia past Germany 86-75. American-born forward Jeremiah Massey had 16 points and four rebounds to give Macedonia its first win.

In a Group E game later Sunday, undefeated France and San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker take on Croatia.

The top four teams in Group E and Group F advance to the quarterfinals.
