Palmeiras allowed defending champion Sao Paulo to move within a point of the lead in the Brazilian league after a 3-2 loss to Vitoria on Sunday.

Palmeiras leads with 44 points, while Sao Paulo reached 43 by beating Avai 2-0 on Saturday and moving into position to fight for its fourth straight title. Sao Paulo also benefited from a home loss by second-placed Internacional, which has the same 43 points and is ahead on victories.

The weekend’s round also saw Adriano score twice for Flamengo and become the competition’s leading scorer with 12 goals, while Fluminense and Botafogo drew 0-0 in a result that left the traditional clubs in the relegation zone.

Midfielder Uelliton put Vitoria ahead at Barradao stadium in Salvador after a 20th-minute blunder by Palmeiras’ World Cup veteran goalkeeper Marcos. He tried to clear a cross by punching the ball away, but it ricocheted off Uelliton inside the area and went straight into his net.

Striker Robert equalized for Palmeiras in the 41st, but Vitoria went ahead again in the 72nd with a goal by forward Neto Berola and added to the lead with a goal from former Porto striker Derlei in the 85th. Robert got on the board for Palmeiras again in the 88th after a cross by substitute Paraguayan striker Jose Maria Orgitoza, who had a chance to equalize in injury time but missed on a close header.

Palmeiras, seeking its first Brazilian league title since 1994, hasn’t won an away match in four rounds.

The result kept alive Vitoria’s three-match unbeaten streak and moved the club to 12th in the 20-team standings.

Sao Paulo, trying to win its seventh Brazilian league title, defeated Avai with second-half goals by striker Dagoberto and midfielder Hugo, earning its second consecutive victory. Avai, promoted from the second division, dropped to 10th in the standings with its third loss in a row – all by 2-0.

Internacional missed a chance to reach sole possession of the lead after the disappointing 3-2 loss to Cruzeiro at Beira-Rio stadium in Porto Alegre. Internacional was leading 1-0 in the first half but allowed Cruzeiro to rally behind a pair of goals by former Hertha Berlin left back Gilberto.

Internacional was coming off three straight victories and hadn’t lost in four matches. Cruzeiro, 13th in the standings, won for the first time in three rounds.

Fourth-placed Atletico Mineiro remained close to the leaders with a 2-1 victory over Atletico Paranaense at Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte. Colombia striker Wason Renteria and forward Diego Tardelli scored for Atletico Mineiro. Tardelli got the winner in the 74th after the teams’ drew 1-1 in the first half.

At Engenhao stadium, Fluminense and Botafogo couldn’t get past a scoreless draw and stayed in the relegation zone. Botafogo, in 18th place, was trying to snap a nine-match winless streak, while last-placed Fluminense was looking for its first victory in seven matches. The bottom four clubs will be demoted.

In other results Sunday, midfielder Germano scored a first-half goal to give ninth-place Santos a 1-0 win over Santo Andre at Vila Belmiro stadium, while fifth-place Goias relinquished an opportunity to get near the leaders by losing 3-1 to eighth-placed Barueri in Barueri. Gremio jumped from 11th to sixth in the standings by beating Nautico 2-0 in Recife, winning for the first time away from home.

At Maracana stadium on Saturday, Adriano helped Flamengo beat Sport 3-0 and extend its unbeaten streak to four matches with a remarkable shot from the top of the area in the second minute and a header in the 89th. The Brazil striker hadn’t scored since Aug. 8 in a 1-0 win over Corinthians.

Former Hamburg midfielder Ze Roberto also got on the board for the five-time national champion, which moved to 11th in the standings. Sport remained in the relegation zone in second-to-last place.

Seventh-place Corinthians plays against Coritiba in Curitiba on Wednesday to close out the 24th round.
