Alena Sharp Wins the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada, pres by Nike Golf in Playoff

(ACTON, ON) September 2, 2011: Hamilton’s Alena Sharp won the PGA Women’s Championship, presented by Nike Golf in a dramatic 8-hole playoff against Toronto amateur Anna Kim at Bayview Golf and Country Club that took two days to complete.

Sharp, Canada’s No 1 ranked LPGA Tour Player and Kim, a high-schooler, played head-to-head over 6 playoff holes until play had to be suspended due to darkness.

During tournament play, Kim finished three groups ahead of Sharp with a final 5-under-par 68, giving her a 7-under 139 for the tournament. Meanwhile Sharp had a bogey on 17 and had to birdie the tough par-4 18th.

“I was in cruise mode yesterday and had the lead pretty much all day” said Sharp, who went on to make a bogey on the second last hole.
“I knew I needed to birdie the last hole. I had a perfect yardage and I hit it past the pin and sucked it back, giving me a tap-in for birdie heading into the playoff” added Sharp.

The shot brought loud cheers from the gallery.

The two headed back down to the 18th tee blocks for the beginning of what would become an intense 8-hole playoff.

“It was a great playoff in the dark” said Sharp after the drive in from the 17th hole where play was suspended after 6 holes.

Kim, a 17 year-old Toronto native who has spent the past six years living in Arizona added “It was a good experience, I was really nervous, especially on my putting because I was playing with one-of-the-top professionals Alena Sharp”, added Kim

The pair resumed the battle at 8am on Friday morning on the 18th hole. Both Sharp and Kim parred the 18th after Kim made an incredible putt. The group then moved to the 10th hole where Kim hit her second shot into the bunker, her chip shot out wasn’t enough to beat Sharp’s tap-in second putt for par.

“I thought of today as a head-to-head match-play” said Sharp. “I knew I wanted to play just a few more yards on every shot. I feel that played to my advantage”, added Sharp.

When asked what the win meant to her, Sharp replied “This win is huge for me, I haven’t won in Canada since 2005. I’ve had struggles in Canada, just putting too much pressure on myself. So this week I came out with no expectations. I just had a lot of fun and stayed in the present” added Sharp.

This is the second time Sharp has won the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada. The first time was in 2004. Sharp takes home $12,000.

Anna Kim will take home the Low Amateur Award for her spectacular efforts at the championship. When asked about her experience at the event, Kim said “I learned a lot. Alena is a great player. I think to get into the professional level I need to work a lot harder and make less mistakes, which is what amateurs do.”

The low Club Champion for the event was PGA of Canada member Sylvie Schetagne of Delson-Laval Quebec.

Mary-Jane Hall, the PGA of Canada’s first female club professional from The Ladies Golf Club of Toronto won the first-ever Legends division trophy taking home $1,200.

2011 marks the 25th anniversary of the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada, an event that was first played in 1987 at Ladies Golf Club of Toronto. This is the third time the championship has been held at Bayview Golf and Country Club.
