Beerschot apologizes for Fukushima taunts (AP)

Vanoppen held the media conference to extend a formal apology to Kawashima for an an incident between the two clubs during a Belgian Pro League match, in which fans hurled insults to the goaltender about the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Belgian league club Beerschot formally apologized to Japan’s Eiji Kawashima on Tuesday after some of its fans taunted the international goalkeeper with jeers of “Fukushima, Fukushima” during a Belgian league game against Lierse last month. The referee interrupted the match until the taunts about Japan’s nuclear power plant disaster in March stopped.
